The Kireka Main Market has started registering, as the government has directed them as it plans to build a modern market for them under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program.
Deputy Minister Christopher Kabuye Kyofatogabye urged the market traders and leaders in Kira Municipality to handle the issue properly to avoid the frequent chaos that causes projects to be delayed.
Under the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program, Kampala will get four markets, Wakiso three markets and Mukono three markets.
Deputy Minister of Kampala Christopher Kabuye Kyofatogabye urged traders to remove politics from the development of the market and ordered them to start registering, so that the government knows whom to prepare for.
Minister Kyofatogabye has found a difficult time , when traders asked him to remove some of the current market managers, when they told him that they are directly involved in the First Market Construction scandal, which therefore would go back to the new Market funds and waste them.
Kireka Main Market Chairman Steven Katende, urged the government to first provide the traders with a place to work during the market expansion, and to guide the distribution of stalls which may not be fair.
Namugongo division mayor Nkalubo Ronald Bulega urged the minister to help the government further open up the area adjacent to the market, so that they can build a spacious market.
The market is located on Kisosonkole land , and is expected to seat over 1,000 traders, from the 420 traders currently operating there.
